Barbers in Pakistan Warned Not To Shave Beards

Barbers in Pakistan have received threats from religious zealots warning them against cutting or shaving beards. These so-called “anti-Islamic activities” make up for “Ninety percent of their business” according to a barber in Inayat Kalay (Reuters).

Notices have been put up on various barber shops in Khar, Pakistan. The notices warn that the barbers would be responsible for damage done to their property if they do not obey.

I understand wanting people to keep their beards. I mean who wants razor-burn? It hurts and makes your neck scratchy. I can appreciate that. The thing that puzzles me is that quote about beard shaving/trimming being 90% of the barbers’ business. Why are these people getting their beards shaved? You would think that if there were groups around that were wiling to destroy the homes and shops of these barbers for merely cutting beards, every man in the region would decide that it is best to pick your battles and keep the beard. Maybe that’s just me though.
