Barack Obama Announces Run, An Angel Gets Its Wings

Barack Obama delivered a speech from the steps of Illinois’ Old State Capital earlier this morning officially announcing that he would in fact run for president. “I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for the President of the United States of America.”

During his speech he recognized and combated what critics believe may be one of his downfalls - his lack of experience. “I know that I haven’t spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington, but I’ve been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change.”

“Let’s be the generation that ends poverty in America.” Obama also called for universal health care by the end of the next president’s term.

He acknowledged that he has opposed the Iraq War from the start. He also called for the withdrawal of troops. “America, it is time we start bringing our troops home.” Obama announced that he favored having all troops out of Iraq by March 2008.

Obama did not specifically mention Bush at all during his speech. Instead, he focused on reaching out to several groups of people. Evangelical Christians being one of them. He opened his speech by thanking God. I know, a liberal who believes in God! *Gasps* Contrary to what you may in fact believe, it appears that Republicans do not have a monopoly on God’s name.

Barack Obama on the issues:
- Is pro choice, supports Roe v. Wade
- Supports embryonic stem cell research
- Supports a universal health care plan
- In January 2007, Obama introduced the “Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007″. Supports a phased withdrawal. Calls for the removal of all troops by March 31, 2008.
- Opposes gay marriage but supports same sex civil unions
You can find a record of his votes in the Senate here.

Well he’s in it, but can he win? This man has a glow around him and a halo on his head, and that worries me, becuse I love this guy. It worries me because no one can keep that up for long unless they are assassinated (think Kennedy). People use the word Kennedy-esque to describe Obama, but I seriously wonder, how Kennedy-esque would Kennedy have been if he had lived and served his full term. It’s as if he lived to make all of these glorious promises, but died before he ever had the chance to deliver. The point is, anyone can look Kennedy-esque when they are making promises. It’s the living up to these promises that sometimes gets fuzzy.

It basically comes down to this. Can anyone really live up to the hype this guy’s been getting? I hope he can, I really do, but I remain skeptical.

This was reported on British TV today and I must admit, I already like the guy. He seems genuine, likable and is just a left of center liberal. Add to that the allure of having the first black president, which can only be good for democracyand I think we definitely have a potential president on our hands.
